When I was twelve years old, there was a remaindered book sale at an empty storefront in my town, right around Christmas. I bought three books.
One was a book of SF short stories, which I can't even find.
One was Hackers, the book that made me want to be a programmer.
The third was a book by an author I'd never heard of, that I picked up on a random whim. It turned out to heavily shape my beliefs on society, freedom, and how a life should be lived.

In terms of life-changing evenings, that book store is way up there.

Tonight, while shopping for something else (Tucker: expect a book in the mail when I get around to mailing it), I found another copy.

I find it amazing, criminal, that this author is as unknown as he is. I already have my copy, and I'd rather have it than a new one anyway, so this one is free to an open mind. Who wants it?

(I wasn't going to say what the book is, but I realize that that's sort of hypocritical, so here is an excerpt.)

Sounds rockin'. And I like books that challenge my preconceptions, even if they don't ultimately alter my views. May I have it?

Anything I can send you in thanks?

And no, cable's not really an option here. Slower, more expensive, and with monthly transfer limits.

I shall do what I can.

Ever read Mordecai Roshwald's Level 7?

Then I think we have a winner.
