I finished the thing I have been working on for the last few days. Essentially, it's a library for rapid prototyping of little Java strategy games, since those are really interesting to me lately. I can easily draw tile-based maps, put graphics on them (or automatically draw colored squares and dots), draw temporary marks over the maps, and respond to mouse hovers and clicks on the cells. None of that is terribly impressive, I just wanted to get this all done very generically once so I can quickly do that sort of thing for other ideas I have.

Everyone with a PC or PDA should go download this now. It's nifty; I would totally give this guy $20 if I had $20. I may make something like this, or incorporate some of his ideas anyway.

Tomorrow I have another midterm, this one in Personal Finance. I got an A on the one yesterday in Databases though.

I've spent some time recently reading two riddle books I got at Origins a couple years ago (the last one I went to). One is just straight rhyming riddles and is fairly easy, but the other is a set of puzzles for use in roleplaying games, and is quite interestingly hard. I must find more of these.

I still have not heard anything back from the possible new contract, which is my friend Steve Voels. Cool one-eyed astrophysicist with a penchant for scientific computing. I'd love to work for him, even if I might have to go to either Houston or Ames to do it. Haven't heard anything though.

Things are looking very bad for my old contract: everyone there is being told to train their replacement from the other company that took it over, although this was not part of the negotiatied new contract. What I find amusing though, is that the person they're really going to need a replacement for was let go in the new contract, so doesn't have to train anybody. They probably have people qualified for every other position there, but there's no way they have a programmer capable of maintaining that code lying around. They're either going to end up making NASA very displeased, or calling SAIC back in six months and asking for me, I bet.

Oh, I almost forgot: tomorrow afternoon I'm going to write a high-score thingy into Dungeon, using a MySQL database on vond.net as a backend. I'm thinking, reduce the amount of gold chests give you, make trapped chests cost you a hundred points, and keep two score lists: one for overall high score and one for highest surviving score. Also, let people put in a nickname (and a password, or something) and keep win/loss records. Show a little dialog with the highest five overall scores, the highest five surviving scores, and the highest five survival/death ratios.
