Also, obviously, they're related in that the humans created the Cylons.
Seen from a certain perspective, this is a story about a religious war. The Cylons have a religion that is different from the humans, the humans don't believe that they can even have a religion ("toasters don't have souls"). The Cylons are religious fanatics compared to the humans, who barely mention their faith in the show. Every other word out of Number 6's mouth is about how God willsthis sequence of events, and time and again through the series she makes Baltar believe. And he's seen as a traitor, because she's able to convert him!
The humans can't tell the Cylons apart. They're seen as lesser creations, and a horde of identical people.
The best description of the show I've seen is this: imagine if, after 9-11, the only people left alive were the ones in the towers.
