To my great shame, after I bought like $200 worth of solitaire games at Origins, I then didn't play any of them for two months.
Today I finally sat down and stepped through a few turns of Runebound, and then got the hang of it and flew through a few more, and now I'm going to go play many more.
It's a really good game. Probably the best pseudo-RPG board game I've played. The only real problem is that solitaire, I see no way to lose. It might take you a while to win, but you'll eventually make it. So it needs something. Not a timer, timers suck, but something.
Multiplayer, it would work perfectly because of the race component. Even if you can't not win, someone else can win first.
Maybe tack on a random quest thingy like Return of the Heroes has, except with quests you can win or lose. Like, at some point you'll have to make a choice, and if you make the wrong one you fail the quest. It would have to not let you memorize he quests though.
