Yesterday I stuck all my games and DVDs, which had been in piles on the floor, in Patrick's old DVD rack.
A side effect of this is that I looked at a bunch of games that I hadn't seen in a while, since they were hidden under other games. So now I'm playing Dark Cloud again.
I think I know why I find Dark Cloud (a game with no plot, bad graphics, annoying music and no multiplayer) so incredibly engrossing: it's Rogue.
Think about it. All the dungeons are randomly generated, you have to worry about stuff like carrying enough water and what to do when your sword falls apart, there's only the one town to buy/sell stuff in, and the plot consists of "there's this dungeon, kill everything in it and gather loot". Except that it's 3D instead of ASCII graphics, it's pretty much exactly like 90% of all Roguelikes.
When I first found Rogue, I didn't play anything else for like a month. Same with Angband, and ZZT ate my life for about three years (and got me seriously into programming, besides).
People should make more console games like this. And yes, I kow about DC2; I'll probably buy it when DC1 ceases to be challenging.
